Editors are far more objective about your writing than you are:

we can see both the ‘big picture’ and the details,

and look at your work from the readers’ point of view.

Some tips:

Always have an ‘outsider’ review your writing before you publish.
A trusted colleague can do that for you, but you’ll be even more confident that your writing is clear, engaging and sharp after a review by an editor.

Did you know that an editor can make such a difference to your writing?

  1. Having recently experienced the Midas touch of an editor I can wholeheartedly recommend, not so much the importance of engaging one, but the absolute necessity of employing one – as so eloquently illustrated above 🙂

    1. Lovely to have you drop by, Linda, and to share your experience with your editor.

I think I might steal your ‘Midas touch’ description 🙂 as I try to convince non-writers who have to write (as Sally said in her comment) that editors do add value to their work.

Thanks, Linda, and I hope you continue to enjoy working with your editor.

  2. Great comparative example Desolie, as it’s actually not so easy to explain the benefit of what you do.

The benefit of an editor is not to be underestimated, particularly for budding writers wanting to show case their writing capabilities.

I really like your blog, there’s always little pearls of wisdom.

    All the best

    1. Thank you so much, Catherine.

Editing is certainly a skill that is best demonstrated, rather than explained. I recently followed a twitter debate about whether editors should receive credit by authors in their books. One of the most interesting comments was about how can readers actually know what the editor had contributed.

So glad you enjoy reading these blogs – I’ll do my best to provide more pearls – Baroque, of course.

Thanks again for your support and appreciation.

  3. I really love seeing the example of what you’ve done Desolie. I particularly like that you’ve improved it yet with only minor tweaks so it still maintained the writer’s words and “voice”. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks Suellen.

So many writers are worried that an editor will change their voice, but an experienced editor knows how to make sure it still ‘sounds like me’ (as one client commented).

  4. I so agree Sally, showing by example is often the only way to get clients to understand the value in using a professional writer/editor. Shame we can’t see them side by side to ‘spot the differences’ my scrolling finger is exhausted!

    Great article
    Thanks
    Kate

  5. I like seeing comparison examples like this, Desolie. I’m not writer and value the demonstration of what you do, how you support the non-writer who must exist in this world of words ;-). This post helps highlight the expertise of editors and ‘sharpeners’ such as yourself!
    Thanks for a great example!

    1. Thanks, Sally.

It’s often easier to show what I do rather than trying to explain.

And it can be quite surprising how simple the changes need to be to turn ordinary writing into memorable writing.
